A bitcoin trader is staring down a potential $98 million liquidation after a punishing week wiped nearly $9.8 million from a Hyperliquid account. With 40x leverage and bitcoin’s price slipping toward $81,000, another sharp decline could finish the job.
A massive bitcoin long position on Hyperliquid is teetering dangerously close to liquidation, with its owner controlling 1,205.30865 BTC worth approximately $97.87 million. The position carries 40x isolated leverage, leaving precious little room for another market stumble.
The trader entered at an average bitcoin price of $81,913.80, but bitcoin’s retreat has already inflicted an unrealized loss of $866,467.24, translating into a negative 30.4% return on equity (ROE). Worse still, the position’s estimated liquidation price sits at $79,828.
The account holds approximately $2.91 million in equity, with $2.85 million committed as margin. Its effective leverage ratio stands at 34.33x, while available margin has dwindled to zero. Funding costs have also extracted $86,952.49 from the position.
Sunday’s market action hasn’t offered much comfort. Bitcoin climbed to $82,170 earlier in the session before sellers seized control, driving the cryptocurrency to an intraday low of $80,888. At approximately 12:25 p.m. EDT on Oct. 18, bitcoin traded near $81,117 on Bitstamp, leaving the trader’s liquidation threshold roughly $1,289 away, a distance of just 1.59%.
Short-term BTC/USD charts capture the damage. Successive red candles battered bitcoin below $81,800, $81,400, and $81,200, accompanied by heavier trading volume during the sharpest declines. Buyers have since attempted to defend $81,000, but the recovery remains tentative. A renewed break beneath $80,888 would put additional pressure on the trader’s already strained position.
The perps DEX account’s recent trading record tells an even harsher story. Over seven days, its cumulative profit and loss plunged to negative $9,779,348.87, while its weekly maximum drawdown reached 78.77%. Across 3,763 recorded trades, hyperbot.network data shows a win rate of just 16.67%. The trader remains entirely exposed to bitcoin’s upside, with 100% long exposure and no short positions providing a counterweight.
Interestingly, bitcoin doesn’t need to crash for this trade to go off the rails. A relatively ordinary market decline could push the position into liquidation territory. There is one important distinction. The $97.87 million figure represents leveraged exposure, not the trader’s personal capital at risk. Actual liquidation depends on Hyperliquid’s mark price and margin calculations, and forced liquidation could occur in stages.
For now, nearly $98 million in bitcoin exposure rests on a margin cushion that could disappear with another difficult afternoon.
