HSBC has launched its first stablecoin, a Hong Kong dollar-backed digital currency designed for everyday payments, marking a significant step toward mainstream adoption of blockchain-based financial services in the city.

The banking giant announced Friday that HSBC RedCoin (RCHKD) is launching through its PayMe mobile payments platform, giving more than 3.3 million users access to the regulated stablecoin. Customers will be able to activate stablecoin wallets within the app over the coming days, enabling instant transfers to friends and family and payments at more than 100,000 merchants.

RedCoin is designed to maintain a one-to-one value with the Hong Kong dollar and is backed by highly liquid, segregated assets. HSBC received its stablecoin issuer license from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) in April under the city’s new regulatory framework.

The launch follows months of preparation, including pilot testing with nearly 100 HSBC employees who evaluated wallet activation, stablecoin issuance, and transfers.

“Money, assets, and information are moving from traditional infrastructure to always-on, data-rich and increasingly programmable digital networks,” said Maggie Ng, HSBC’s Hong Kong CEO. She said the bank sees an opportunity to help customers navigate that transition through practical financial products.

HSBC plans to expand RedCoin’s capabilities later this year by integrating stablecoin wallets into its HSBC HK Mobile Banking App. Customers will also be able to use the digital currency to purchase tokenized investment products, including a forthcoming share class of the bank’s Hong Kong dollar money market fund.

The bank also intends to expand RedCoin into wholesale corporate and institutional applications.

“This is only the beginning,” said John O’Neill, HSBC’s managing director of digital assets and currencies, describing the launch as a major step toward making regulated digital assets widely accessible in Hong Kong.

The stablecoin builds on HSBC’s broader blockchain initiatives, including its Orion digital bond issuance platform , which has facilitated more than $8.3 billion in digitally native bond issuances since 2023.

HSBC also offers a tokenized gold product that has generated $2.5 billion in trading volume across 390,000 transactions since its 2024 launch, along with tokenized deposit services for wholesale payments.

The RedCoin rollout comes as Hong Kong seeks to establish itself as a global digital asset hub through regulatory oversight and expanded institutional participation in blockchain-based finance.
