The investment buys preferred stock in a young national bank built for AI, defense, robotics, and hard tech companies
Robinhood Ventures Fund I has invested $30 million in Erebor Bank, National Association. The deal, announced on October 21, 2026, takes the form of a preferred stock purchase.
Erebor is not a household name yet. It is, however, the first new national bank charter established during the second Trump administration.
Erebor is designed to serve capital-intensive sectors such as AI, robotics, defense, and hard tech.
Erebor’s pitch is that traditional banks have left a gap in servicing these high-risk, emerging technology companies. The product menu reflects that focus. Erebor’s mission includes specialized services such as API banking and stablecoin payments.
The research notes that Erebor serves potentially crypto-related clients, though the bank’s headline focus remains the broader hard tech crowd.
Erebor’s charter path ran through approvals in October and December 2025 before it received its national charter in February 2026. The bank is based in Columbus, Ohio.

It launched with around $635 million in initial funding from venture capital sources.
Deposits then climbed quickly. Erebor went from approximately $1.1 billion in deposits shortly after launch to approximately $4.6 billion by the end of July 2026.
Annualized revenue estimates sat at about $112 million as of July 2026.
Robinhood now joins an investor base that already includes Lux Capital and Andreessen Horowitz.
Erebor has been staffing up as well. The bank brought on a former HSBC executive to strengthen its emerging market initiatives.
In October 2026, Erebor also announced a $20 million community opportunity initiative aimed at community development.
The deposit trajectory is the number to watch. Going from approximately $1.1 billion to approximately $4.6 billion is impressive, but deposits concentrated in high-risk sectors can also leave quickly when those sectors hit a rough patch.
The stablecoin payments piece deserves attention from the crypto side of the market. A federally chartered bank building stablecoin payments into its offering adds another link between digital assets and the regulated banking system.
For now, Erebor has capital, a growing deposit base, about $112 million in estimated annualized revenue as of July, and a fresh $30 million from Robinhood Ventures Fund I.
