A return to a heavily watched price level squeezed bearish traders after weeks of pain that mostly hit the bulls
Bitcoin retested $82,000, and the move cost leveraged short sellers $20 million in liquidations.
A short is a bet that price will fall. Add leverage, and that bet is made with borrowed money that an exchange can pull the moment the trade moves against you.
When Bitcoin pushed back toward $82,000, some of those positions hit their liquidation thresholds. Exchanges closed them automatically, wiping out $20 million in short exposure.
Forced closures of shorts also mean forced buying. Each liquidated short has to be bought back, which can add a little fuel to the move that caused it in the first place.
Total liquidations across crypto derivatives markets topped $1 billion during some stretches of October 2026. CoinGlass data showed long positions making up roughly 80-90% of those totals.
Specific flushes included $771 million in liquidations, mostly from long trades. Separate events wiped out $120 million and $485 million at other points.
Bitcoin has spent early to mid-October 2026 trading near $82,000. It has retested that level several times and slipped below it more than once.

Rising oil prices, fresh US inflation data, rising Treasury yields and moves in Asian equity markets have all weighed on risk appetite.
Spot Bitcoin ETFs in the US have also seen outflows totaling hundreds of millions of dollars in a single week.
Traders have been watching a support zone around $81,000 to $82,000. A second line sits lower, near $80,100.
The heavy long liquidations earlier in the month forced a partial clean-out of the derivatives market. Bitcoin futures open interest dropped to around $52.7 billion afterward.
The $20 million short squeeze tells you positioning had shifted. After weeks of punishing longs, enough traders had turned bearish that a bounce to $82,000 could catch some of them offside.
Still, the size of this squeeze is a reminder to keep expectations calibrated. A $20 million flush is a ripple compared to the $771 million long wipeout.
For anyone trading with leverage, the $81,000 to $82,000 zone remains the line to watch. A clean break below it could put the $80,100 level in play.
For longer-term holders, if US spot Bitcoin ETFs stop bleeding capital, that would remove one of the clearer sources of pressure this month.
